Animal Welfare in Greece:

NEWSFLASH! We now work with a Pet Chauffeur who makes overland trips from Greece through Europe up to the UK once or twice a month. So getting an adopted pet home is now easier then ever. Don't think twice about adopting that stray that you have fallen in love with! Contact us and we will help you with all the arrangements.

You may be on holiday and somehow, somewhere, a  stray dog or cat catches your eye. You start feeding it. Before you know it, it is going on walks with you. It shares your meals at tavernas. It waits patiently outside your hotel for you. When it sees you its sheer delight is heartwarming. But soon your holiday comes to an end and with it the thought: what is going to happen to Mikey/Tasha/Aris/Poppy when you leave? You KNOW that stray animals in Greece have a difficult time when summer is over and the tavernas close. You think of your new pal, cold, hungry and desperate with no love or shelter. Your heart constricts at the thought.

You may call your local animal charity only to be told the same story all over: we don't have enough space, funds, manpower... WHY DON'T YOU TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU?

Why not indeed? PAWS can help you do that! It is actually a lot easier than you think!

Your new pet may travel without restriction to any EU country including the UK* as long as it complies with EU laws of animal transport. To start, here is an overview on what is required:

So your new pet can actually leave Greece and travel to its new home within 21 days of visiting the vet! Any licensed vet will be fully aware of EU requirements for travel and be able to prepare your pet for travel with one visit. It is a common procedure.

We have a lot of experience sending animals abroad. We can advise you of travel arrangements to most EU destinations. Depending on size, destination and date of travel, the animal may travel as either a pet-in-cabin or in the cargo hold. It may travel in cargo either accompanied by a passenger or as "freight". There are also reliable pet transport companies that transport pets by special vans overland.

We can also send you to vets we work with in Volos who are fully experienced in all the paperwork for sending an animal out of Greece. We may also lend you a travel box to transport your pet (depending on availability and subject to return). We are willing to do all this because, hey, that would be one more stray off the streets and onto a happy life!

If you are thinking about adopting a stray and bringing it home, please do not delay in contacting us. We'd be delighted to answer any questions and futher inform you. Whilst we can help you with all the arrangements YOU will have to be responsible for bringing the animal to the vet and eventually making all the travel arrangements. Please do not leave it till the last minute... the fate of your new pal depends on you!

Here is additional information for pet travel requirements in the EU and to UK and Ireland.

* From January of 2012, pets may enter the UK without undergoing the 6 month quarantine period that was previously required, providing that they comply with regulations that are practically the same as EU pet travel scheme. Hooray!
